Iran-US Tensions Drive Oil Market Upward, Triggering 7% Price Increase

Global oil prices experienced a significant surge, climbing over 7%, as escalating military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia stirred fears of potential disturbances in the world’s energy supply. Brent crude oil saw its value increase by nearly 8%, reaching around $90.75 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose by almost 7% to roughly $84.76 per barrel. This sharp rise followed recent military engagements that have sparked worries about the prospect of an extended regional conflict.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran reported that it had launched ballistic missiles aimed at U.S. military bases located in Jordan. This was described as a retaliatory move in response to recent American military operations. Concurrently, joint U.S. and Saudi military forces conducted coordinated attacks on positions held by Iran-supported militants in Iraq. These forces stated that the operation was focused on logistics and armament sites connected to recurrent drone assaults targeting military and energy infrastructures.

Concerns regarding maritime security have also been heightened by these developments. The IRGC claimed its naval units intercepted and assaulted three oil tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz, alleging they failed to heed navigation warnings. Additionally, Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for targeting an oil tanker associated with Saudi interests in the Red Sea, further intensifying the threats facing commercial shipping in these waters.

This renewed instability in the region has amplified fears about disruptions in oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, both critical corridors for global energy transit. Market experts have cautioned that ongoing attacks on shipping lanes and energy infrastructure could sustain elevated oil prices and contribute to increased volatility in international markets.
