The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has officially granted xAI permission to operate 41 methane gas turbines at its “Colossus 2” facility. This approval effectively doubles the previous capacity of the onsite power plant located in Southaven. The decision marks a significant victory for Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture as it seeks to bolster its computing infrastructure. These turbines are essential for running the massive arrays of chips that process the company’s Grok AI tool.
This development follows the rapid establishment of xAI’s presence in the region, starting with the original “Colossus” facility in Memphis. That site, which covers an area comparable to 13 football fields, received its own permits for 15 gas generators last year. The expansion into Mississippi with Colossus 2 and a planned third site named “Macrohardrr” shows the company’s aggressive growth strategy. By building its own power sources, xAI aims to bypass traditional grid limitations to keep its supercomputers running 24/7.
The permit approval comes despite a wave of local resistance and organized protests from environmental advocates. During recent public hearings, Southaven residents expressed deep concerns regarding the noise and air pollution generated by the industrial site. Critics argue that the state regulators prioritized the needs of a multi-billion dollar corporation over the health of the local population. Environmental groups warn that the 41 turbines will release significant amounts of nitrogen oxide and formaldehyde into the atmosphere.
